The Carolina Gigantes defeated the San Sebastián Caribes in 5 sets. It was a back and forth match for the first four sets with each team exchanging wins: 25-20, 19-25, 27-25, and 22-25. Corozal and Caguas win easily

The Corozal Pinkin and the Caguas Criollas got wins tonight by beating the Ponce Leonas and the San Sebastián Caribes, respectively.

At Ponce, the Pinkin dominated the game from the early going and didn’t look back in winning 25-13, 25-15, and 25-19. Erin Moore and Kristee Porter scored 16 points each for Corozal. Ponce is still winless after 7 games this season.

The Caguas Criollas also got an easy victory over the San Sebastián Caribes with scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-15. Lisvel Eve scored 17 points for Caguas.

Corozal overpowers Ponce 3-0

Corozal has an excellent beginning to the game by opening an 8-1 lead which brings the technical time-out after a Vilmarie Mojica Kill. A kill by the middle blocker Rayma Robles puts the score at 10-1 and Ponce takes a time-out. By the second technical time-out the Pinkin leads 16-5. Corozal wins 19-9 after a good block and Ponce has to take another time out. Corozal wins the set 25-13.

The second game begins just like the first one, with Corozal holding a 8-0 lead behind a great serving performance from Kristee Porter. The Pinkin keep up their great execution and force Ponce into making countless mistakes. Corozal leads 16-8 at the second technical time-out. The Leonas take their second time-out trailing 23-13. Corozal wins the second game 25-15.

In the third the Leonas attempt a comeback and lead 8-6 at the first technical time-out. But Ponce’s energy runs out and the Pinkin retake the lead 11-10 and 16-11 after a kill by Rayma that forces the second technical time out. Ponce can’t contain the Pinkin attack and has to take another time out losing 19-14. Corozal earns the victory 25-19. Podcast

Toa Baja, Carolina, and San Sebastián get wins on a busy night

Friday night was a busy night in the 2009 Women’s League Tournament with 6 of the 10 teams in action.

In Toa Baja, the Llaneras maintained their undefeated status as they beat the Ponce Leonas in straight games 25-18, 25-18, and 26-24. Alex Crimes, middle blocker for the Llaneras, was the best scorer with 18 points.

The Carolina Gigantes got a measure of revenge in a rematch of last year’s semifinals by beating the Caguas Criollas in 4 sets. The scores were 25-23, 13-25, 25-23, and 25-21. Both teams have now identical records with 3-2 each.

In a 5-game thriller, the San Sebastián Caribes got their second win of the season by coming from behind 2-0 to beat the Guaynabo Mets 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 17-25, and 8-15. Shonda Cole from the Caribes was the best scorer of the game with 34 points. Podcast

The Corozal Pinkin won their fourh game of the season when they beat the Juncos Valencianas in straight sets 25-23, 25-22 and 25-21. Corozal had a great effort by Erin Moore with 17 points and Yamileska Yantín with 13. Corozal improves to 4-2 while Juncos falls to 2-3. The Juncos Valencianas beat the San Sebastián Caribes in four games: 25-22, 24-26, 25-27, and 20-25. After losing the first game of the match, Juncos got its rhythm back and won the other three in a row. The Caribes record is now 1-4, and Juncos improves to 2-2. Podcast








Corozal gets its 3rd victory

Corozal Pinkin won its third match of the season defeating the Carolina Gigantes in five games: 25-19, 23-25, 16-25, 25-18, and 15-11. Its was a hard-fought match with Corozal getting the upper hand early with an effective serve which caused problems for the Gigantes’ offense. However, late in the second and in the third game, it was Corozal having trouble with their reception and passing. The fourth game became a must win for the Pinkin and they responded rallying behind strong kills from Yamileska Yantín. In the fifth game Corozal took the lead for good at 7-6 and won 15-11 in a nice kill from Erin Moore. Yamileska Yantín was the top scorer for Corozal with 24 points, followed by Erin Moore with 21.
